Dettol is a brand that produces cleaning products, antiseptics, and disinfectants. Dettol was founded in 1933 by the company Reckitt & Sons in the UK. Reckitt & Sons, now known as Reckitt Benckiser Group, manufactures top products in relation to health, hygiene, and home products such as AirWick, Lysol, Durex, Strepsils, and much more (Reckitt, 2021). Dettol’s story started after Dr William Colebrook Reynolds (Father of Dettol) joined the company (Dettol: Under the Microscope | reckitt.com, n.d.). Dettol was used first for sepsis and grew among hospitals, and it became the most trusted antiseptic brand. It got introduced in many nations but became very significant in India.

80 years later, Dettol is now a household name, and it is trusted by millions. It has grown plenty over the last couple of years as it played a huge role in fighting the COVID-19 Pandemic. It partnered with Transport for London to reintroduce safe travel. In India, Dettol has affected citizens in changing their behaviors towards hygiene (Our Heritage: This Iconic Brand Has Been in Our Homes for Over 80 Years and Its Inspiring Story Is One of Innovation, Science and Purpose, 2021).

The pandemic has allowed Dettol to be an ever-growing company, focused on educating and empowering consumers through campaigns and not only advertisements. Dettol won a Gold Effie Award in 2021 for an effective marketing campaign. Dettol has continuously grown in terms of brand and revenue over the past three years, 14% growth in 2020, 3.5% in 2021, and 3.3% at the start of 2022 (RB Reckitt: 2021 Full Year Results, 2022). Dettol was also a top priority hygiene partner in UAE’s Expo 2020 to provide their top-quality hygiene products for visitors, participants, and staff (Dettol Helps Make Hygiene a Top Priority at Expo 2020 | Expo 2020 Dubai, 2021).

A complication that Dettol has had years after it was founded, issued regarding health and safety issues. Dettol contains some agents and contents that were reportedly causing pneumonia, cardiopulmonary arrest, and more issues with the airways (Serious complications associated with Dettol poisoning, 1993). There were many articles that followed that documented some of these cases after the ingestion of the product (Fatal self-poisoning with Dettol, 1977). Dettol did not bounce back with any response. However, Dettol has made it clear that the products are created for external use only and shall not be ingested as it is a disinfectant product.

In the current year, Dettol continues to seek innovation and growth even after having the “Father of Dettol” as a big part of its brand. Their brand has a strong team of researchers, scientists, and hygiene experts all over the world to make sure their products are reaching expectations while following sustainability. They strive for new technologies and formulas to produce quality products that are safe to use (Science And Innovation, 2022).

FIFA

FIFA stands for Federation Internationale de Football Association. It was founded in 1904 with a mission for unity among national soccer associations. Under the governance of FIFA, soccer has become the world’s most popular sport. FIFA governs all aspects of the game; rules and regulations of gameplay, transfer of players, establishing standards for refereeing, coaching, sports medicine, soccer development around the world, and international competitions such as the FIFA World Cup (U.S. Soccer Federation, n.d.).

FIFA’s Slogan: Fair Play
The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the world's governing body of football, developed a campaign in the late 1980s to make the idea of fair play more tangible and obvious. The general idea stands for the advantages of following the rules, employing common sense, and showing respect for other players, referees, opponents, and spectators. FIFA aims to convey the significance of fair play as a fundamental in all sporting activities, especially children's activities, through a straightforward design and code of conduct. (A. M. knowledge. November 29, 2022)

Fair play involves abstaining from doping or illegal drug use. Anyone who does this messes with everyone else's game. “Fair play” depends on being honest and having strong moral principles. If you want to be a great champion, you must play sports inside a strong ethical framework. Supporting one another is crucial, as is sharing thoughts, aspirations, and ideas. Mutual success both on and off the field is a result of mutual support. Self-control is developed by being willing to accept actions or decisions that you may not agree with. At the end of the day, that might determine whether you win or lose.

The World Cup is likely the most popular sports event that has billions of viewers watching every tournament. The tournaments happen in a four-year cycle to allow time for qualification tournaments and playoffs among national teams (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 2022). The country where the World Cup is hosted is decided by FIFA. Interesting countries or cities bid on having it hosted, and then members of the FIFA committee vote for the venue (Conti, 2022). The lucky host of the World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Qatar has mentioned in BCC Sport that “everyone will be welcome” at the 2022 World Cup, however, controversies say otherwise (What Can Fans Expect at the Qatar World Cup? 2022).

There have been many controversies and allegations about workers in Qatar regarding slavery, migrant workers, corruption, and even deaths. Qatari companies used to operate under a system named “Kafala.” They would sponsor workers to come to the country to work and then prevent them from leaving their jobs. A 2021 report stated that a campaign group called ‘Human Rights Watch’ mentioned that workers were suffering from illegal wage deductions and faced many months of unpaid wages even after the government enforced measures to protect foreign laborers in 2017 (“How Can We Work Without Wages?,” 2021). According to a report by Pattisson and McIntyre, over 6,500 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka have died in Qatar since they won the right to host the World Cup 10 years ago (2022). There were 37 deaths directly linked to the construction of the World Cup stadium, and they were classified as “non-work related” by the organizing committee of the event. Other sources investigated Qatar’s intense summer heat, and how it can be a significant factor that was linked to many worker deaths (McIntyre et al., 2022). There is not much transparency about death reports, creating controversies.
